Does Your LinkedIn Network Make You Feel Limitless Mine Does 17 Flares 17 Flares I love LinkedIn.  But I also love putting work into LinkedIn. The bold should tell you that the second sentence is far more important.  Unfortunately, far too many job seekers complain that LinkedIn hasnt worked for them, so they end up failing to put in the proper work/time that building a LinkedIn network requires. Sure, LinkedIn can be a short term solution to your job search, but its far more powerful when you consistently build up your network, and use it as a career tool.  Dont mistake career tool, for job search tool.   When you have more connections in your network, the possibilities have you feeling more and more like Bradley Cooper in that movie Limitless.  A massive amount of connections gives you the power to connect with almost anyone, from any company, and from any location.  Limitless.  Oh, and a big shout out to Philly native, Bradley Cooper. Connect.  Connect. Connect. Connect. Connect. Then connect some more. If any of this is new to you, I do believe that I covered much of the basics, and then some in my Ultimate Beginners Guide to LinkedIn.  Read it. I am certainly not bragging by showing you the following screen shot of my network connections, but youll see that my LinkedIn statistics do give me the luxury of connecting with a fairly large amount of people.  Over 16 million to be exact.  Still, I do know many folks (mostly recruiters) who have a much larger network than I have.  Take a look at the shot: Just by having a direct connection to 2,000+ people, Im able to get in touch with and contact some 16 million people.  Hell yes. Their main page has tabs about the firm, Job Seekers (lists current positions), Career Resources (sign-up for updates and review interview questions) and Submit Resume. RSMR Global Resources, Inc. RSMR is a global retained search firm focused on the Construction Industry (Architects, Engineering, etc.) as well as HR consulting. The main page gives an overview of the firm with a link to practice areas and a candidate link. The candidate page has open positions, interview materials, submit resume and a candidate FAQ. Lucas Group Lucas has 18 locations around the world. They cover several industries, but are known as the largest source of of military personnel transitioning into Corporate America. The main page has links for Expertise (industries covered) as well as Job Seeker Resources. The Job Seeker page allows registration (you can submit your resume and profile), job search, articles and upcoming events. This page also offers descriptions for each area of coverage. Review of The Twitter Book - You didnt think you needed another social network to propel your job search? Youre on LinkedIn isnt that enough? If you are a regular reader, you know that I am a bit of a Twitter evangelist! I think that Twitter is a terrific resource for job seekers, entrepreneurs and all professionals for connecting and network expanding. While I think of using Twitter as second nature, there are many ins and outs, and it really is not all that obvious to everyone. So, I was excited to receive The Twitter Book, by Tim OReilly and Sarah Milstein. As the authors note in Chapter 1, Twitter lives a dual life. On one hand, its a simple service. Besides letting you share and read very short messages, it has few bells and whistles. On the other hand, it can be surprisingly hard to figure out. The screens arent particularly intuitive and the jargon and symbols are obscure. So, I read the book both as an expert user and as a coach looking for resources to help my clients become more frequent and successful Tweeps. I was not disappointed on either count! For new users, the book offers a tutorial on how to get signed up and started and how to create a profile. I was surprised and delighted to find that Sarah and Tim actually quoted my Twitter profile as an example of a bio that tells a story (see page 23)! The book covers all of the terminology that Twitter users need to know and provides pictures and examples throughout. Need to know how to find people? Done. How to tweeet from the road? Done. Whats a RT (retweet) and can you edit it if it is too long to send? (Yes, but consider using via if you change it substantially, p. 115). Power users did YOU know that there is an opp called 140it that uses common cutting conventions to whittle down your posts if they are too long? (It doesnt work for every post, but I had never heard about it, and Ive been tweeting up a storm for a while now.) Suffice to say that any detail you need to know is available in this handy, easy to use reference. But, using Twitter successfully requires more than just a list of how to, practical concerns. There are many nuanced aspects, and Sarah and Tim dont forget about them in this book. Included in the book: discussions about how many people to follow, how to have great conversations, how to @ reply so the user will know what you mean, how often to tweet and how to go beyond what are you doing? to be a contributing member of your Twitter community and more. Id recommend this book to anyone hesitant to try Twitter because it seems overwhelming and current tweeps who would like to pick up some tips from the pros. Competition can be stiff and sending off hundreds of resumes into the dark abyss that is the internet, in the hopes that someone will open it and call you in for an interview, can take what feels like forever.For some, it takes months. One FBGer under the name StillClimbing38 took to the FGB Community to share zu sich own story of job hunting for six months.Ladies, I am very pleased to announce that after mora than six months of tirelessly applying, searching, interviewing, receiving numerous rejections, blood, sweat and (many) tears, I have finally landed a new job she writes. Along the way, I had to reevaluate what was really important to me. Please bedrngnise my earlier post about being in a toxic work environment. In the past, I had a tendency to jump from one toxic work situation to the next. For one thing, I was so desperate to leave a bad situation that I didnt notice that I was jumping into anotzu sich toxic work environment. Secondly, I focused too much on money and not enough on culture. Finally, I decided the industry was partly to blame and tailored my job hunt toward a different industry.In her interviews, she says she asked tons of questions about company culture and work-life balance, and she focused her inquiries on how employees felt coming to work.I had five interviews with this company before they finally made an offer to me, she says. When asked what my expected salary was, I thought long and hard about what was (is) truly important to me. I thought about all the perks, culture and atmosphere I loved about this company. I threw out a number that was on the modest end of what I wanted. They offered me the job. I start next month and I couldnt be happierStillClimbing38 also acknowledges that there are so many other women in her shoes.I feel there are SO many women out there dissatisfied with their current job who need a career change but are unsure how to go about doing so, she says.Thats why she goes on to share the lessons she learned in her half-year job hunt with the community. Heres what she had to say.1. Finding a job takes time.You have to apply for a lotof jobs, she says. You will get a lot of rejection notices. Most companies dont even have the courtesy to respond that you didnt get the job. You will think you are a loser. It is an emotional roller coaster. People kept telling me to hang in there, it will get better. I didnt believe them. But they were right Believe in yourself. Well done2. Asking for help is OK.Get help, she advises. A career coach is an excellent investment. Shop around and find someone that you like and can afford. You may only have to meet with them a couple of times, but they can help you figure out what you want and how to get it.3. Keep an open mind.Diversify, she says. When I first started my job hunt, I applied for all the jobs I thought I wanted, administrative manager, inside sales, project manager. However, after applying for supply chain analyst roles, I found those were the call-backs I was getting.
