5 Tips for Managing Conflict in the Workplace

5 Tips for Managing Conflict in the Workplace5 Tips for Managing Conflict in the WorkplaceWere all human, and as long as we dont turn into robots, its inevitable well occasionally experience conflict in the workplace. But as managers of finance and accounting teams, wouldnt you prefer to oversee an environment where coworkers dont clash, friction doesnt escalate into headbutting and everyone works to their full abilities? In an Accountemps survey, CFOs said they spend six hours a week, on average, managing conflicting parties on their staff. Some of the executives (17 percent) say they spend a quarter to more than half of their precious time dealing with conflict in the workplace.View the infographic, below, to see what percentage of management time is wasted on resolving employee personality issues.Sound familiar? Just think what you could do with that six hours a week if you didnt have to manage all those disagreements that erode into discord. Follow these five ways to encourage you r workers to get along with others in the office1. Promote the flow of communicationPutting your head in the sand really doesnt help when theres conflict in the workplace. Problems rarely resolve themselves on their own and can even become worse if theyre not addressed. So be proactive.Encourage those on your team who are having difficulty with a coworker to get their disagreements out in the open while theyre still small. Here are some hints you can offer themAsk your coworker with whom youre not seeing eye to eye to name a time when it would be convenient for the two of you to meet, in a place where you wont be interrupted. After laying out your point of view on the issue, listen carefully to what the other person has to say, show empathy, avoid interrupting, and ask questions to clarify what was said. Identify points of agreement and disagreement, and ask if your coworker agrees with your assessment.Express your desire to work out a solution and discuss ways to resolve your confli ct and improve your relationship.2. Practice what you preachManagers, of course, need to lead the way with communication on the job. Here are some suggestions executives share to help you prevent conflicts while building rapport with your teams and colleaguesDont take yourself too seriously.Take an interest without participating in office politics.Nip rumors in the bud by offering accurate and up-to-date clarifications.Project an image of professionalism and good etiquette.Respect unique points of view, and dont criticize others publicly.Check in regularly, and show how you value other peoples input.Be honest, reliable and direct with your communication style.Build your relationships by inviting others to coffee or lunch outside of the office.3. Let your team know you can helpA critical component of leadership is developing a sense of whats important for you to do in times of stress.First of all, tell your employees that if they find themselves in over their head, or if theyve tried to resolve a conflict and the negative behavior continues to impede their work, they can use you as a resource. As a higher-up in your organization, you can provide recommendations and bring in another manager or someone from human resources for mediation. Some suggestions for helping people work togetherWork to use your best listening skills so you can readily identify their concerns and the root cause of the problem.Encourage the two sides to put aside their differences and find common ground - such as the desire to help the company to succeed.Make it clear that their cooperation is required, and then continue to monitor the situation so the issue doesnt fester and become worse. When people believe their voices will be heard, they are more likely to perform at their best. Communication goes both ways, so inspire a relationship where they give you timely status reports and feedback about difficulties or challenges. 4. View everything as a learning opportunityPerhaps, conflict in the workplace could be seen in a positive light. For all the grief disagreements can cause, theres an upside when your workers can learn from them. Differing opinions can stimulate innovation and give added impetus for team building.Helping to resolve disputes can put those you manage in a better position to assume leadership roles in your company. You can tell a temporary worker who wants to move into a full-time role that tact and diplomacy in dealing with conflict in the workplace can make a good impression on management. Or let an employee know that effectively working well with others can help with career advancement.5. Criticize gently and praise achievementIn a perfect world, everyone on your staff would be flawless at their jobs. But the reality is that they will make mistakes, get into arguments, experience personnel problems, miss deadlines. When you need to call attention to shortcomings, make it your goal to preserve each individuals dignity. Meet in private and allow them to explain the problem and what might have led to it. Rather than assigning blame, reframe a mistake or failure as a lesson, and focus on what might be done differently in the future. All professionals appreciate recognition, particularly when theyve put in extra time or effort. So make a goal to celebrate resolution when your team achieves it. Even if theyve made just small steps, congratulate them on the progress. Theyre not robots, after all

Even a genius has to sell himself the resume of Leonardo da Vinci

Even a genius has to sell himself the resume of Leonardo da VinciEven a genius has to sell himself the resume of Leonardo da VinciBefore he welches famous, before he painted the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper, before he invented the helicopter, before he drew the most famous image of man, before he was all of these things, Leonardo da Vinci was an armorer, a weapons guy, a maker of things that go boom. And, like you, he had to put together a resume to get his next gig. So in 1482, at the age of 30, he wrote out a letter and a list of his capabilities and sent it off to Ludovico il Moro, Duke of Milan. So to celebrate Leonardos birthday last week, Id like to share his wonderful resume with you.The translation of this letter is quite remarkableMost Illustrious Lord, Having now sufficiently considered the specimens of all those who proclaim themselves skilled contrivers of instruments of war, and that the invention and operation of the said instruments are nothing different from those in c ommon use I shall endeavor, without prejudice to any one else, to explain myself to your Excellency, showing your Lordship my secret, and then offering them to your best pleasure and approbation to work with effect at opportune moments on all those things which, in part, shall be briefly noted below. I have a sort of extremely light and strong bridges, adapted to be most easily carried, and with them you may pursue, and at any time flee from the enemy and others, secure and indestructible by fire and battle, easy and convenient to lift and distribution policy. Also methods of burning and destroying those of the enemy.I know how, when a place is besieged, to take the water out of the trenches, and make endless variety of bridges, and covered ways and ladders, and other machines pertaining to such expeditions.3. If, by reason of the height of the banks, or the strength of the place and its position, it is impossible, when besieging a place, to avail oneself of the plan of bombardment, I have methods for destroying every rock or other fortress, even if it were founded on a rock, etc.Again, I have kinds of mortars most convenient and easy to carry and with these I can fling small stones almost resembling a storm and with the smoke of these cause great terror to the enemy, to his great detriment and confusion. And if the fight should be at sea I have kinds of many machines most efficient for offense and defense and vessels which will resist the attack of the largest guns and powder and fumes.I have means by secret and tortuous mines and ways, made without noise, to reach a designated spot, even if it were needed to pass under a trench or a river.I will make covered chariots, safe and unattackable, which, entering among the enemy with their artillery, there is no body of men so great but they would break them. And behind these, infantry could follow quite unhurt and without any hindrance. In case of need I will make big guns, mortars, and light ordnance of fine and us eful forms, out of the common type.Where the operation of bombardment might fail, I would contrive catapults, mangonels, trabocchi, and other machines of marvellous efficacy and not in common use. And in short, according to the variety of cases, I can contrive various and endless means of offense and defense. In times of peace I believe I can give perfect satisfaction and to the equal of any other in architecture and the composition of buildings public and private and in guiding water from one place to another.I can carry out sculpture in marble, bronze, or clay, and also I can do in painting whatever may be done, as well as any other, be he who he may. Again, the bronze horse may be taken in hand, which is to be to the immortal glory and eternal honor of the prince your father of happy memory, and of the illustrious house of Sforza. And if any of the above-named things seem to anyone to be impossible or not feasible, I am most ready to make the experiment in your park, or in whateve r place may please your Excellency to whom I comment myself with the utmost humility, etc. What a fantastic piece of personal absatzwirtschaft Theres none of his famous backwards-mirror writing here - this letter was intended to be read and to persuade.Heres what I think we can learn from Leonardos resumeYoull notice he doesnt recite past achievements. He doesnt mention the painting of the altarpiece for the Chapel of St Bernard he doesnt provide a laundry list of past bombs hes built he doesnt cite his prior employment in artist Andrea di Ciones studio. No, he does none of these things, because those would be about his achievements, not the Dukes needs.Instead, he sells his prospective employer on what Leonardo can do for him.Now imagine being the Duke of Milan and receiving this magnificent letter from the young prodigy of Florence. The specific descriptives paint a vivid picture of siege engines and bombardments and mortars and trench-draining and bridges to defeat the enemy. You can imagine the scenes that ran through the Dukes head as he held this letter in his hands and read through Leonardo da Vincis bold statements of capabilities. What Renaissance Duke wouldnt want kinds of mortars most convenient and easy to carry that can fling small stones almost resembling a storm? Sounds pretty enticing. And thats exactly what your resume needs to do, too. Not the laundry list / standard bio that talks about you, but the marketing piece that talks about the benefits to your future employer and how you fit into his or her needs and desires.Ladders Resume, our free tool, can help you be (almost) as persuasive. So it turns out that even on his 565th birthday, this remarkable fellow Leonardo da Vinci is teaching us about the future. What a genius.Heres wishing you an illustrious week, ReadersAs the Italians might saySto tifo per te(Im rooting for you),

Frequently Asked Questions About Navy Assignments

Frequently Asked Questions About Navy AssignmentsFrequently Asked Questions About Navy AssignmentsIf you are considering joining the military (any branch) start your research and education long before you step foot into the recruiters office. Your education into the Navy should not begin with the recruiter telling you what you should do in the Navy. You should have a good understanding of what job (rating) you want to apply for - perhaps your top three to be honest. Too many people make a major recruiting mistake by not doing their due diligence into the opportunities available with military service. Do yourself a favor and start now. Start with this article followed by the official websites and forum groups of the service and the job you are seeking. Your experience will be much better if you know where you want to be distributions-mixd versus getting placed where the Navy needs you the most. The Basics There are manyrules and regulations surrounding job assignments in the Navy . In general, sailors are assigned to ships or submarines (sea duty) for three years, and shore duty for three years. That doesnt mean that sailors will spend their entire three-year deployment at sea, since ships and submarines spend a large amount of time docked in their home ports. Though expect about half your time deployed or out to sea training to deploy. See the world - join the Navy Here are some of the most frequently-asked questions about Navy assignments. Shore Duty Questions Q How likely is it that I will be able to get an extension while on shore duty? A These decisions are made by detailers, who are in charge of all assignments for a given job community and rate range.Although the detailer makes every effort to approve personal requests, requests to extend beyond the normal shore duty length are not usually approved, since it would potentially require adjusting another sailors sea tour due to fleet requirements. Q Can I go to a specific location for my shore duty i f I want to be near home? A Very limited opportunity exists for shore duty outside of the normal fleet-concentrated areas. The availability of billets, the priority of those billets and a sailors career path will be the primary deciding factors of their next assignment. However, there are recruiting duty opportunities in every state. If you want to get home or near home, it may require a recruiting duty shore tour unless you are from a place that has a major military base. Q Can I go to C school en route to my next command? A All Navy enlisted jobs (ratings) have an A school, where sailors learn fundamental skills, and a C school, which involves advanced training for that job. Most C school quotas are utilized to fill Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) requirements of a commands billet file. If there is a valid requirement for a new NEC and if a school quota is open in the proper transfer window then a C school may be considered en route to the next command. Questions About Navy Orders Q When should I expect to get my orders? A Each detailer writes orders as soon as possible near the six-month window, so only a sailors specific detailer can answer this. Most orders are in the sailors hand within three weeks of being released by the detailer. Q When is the best time to call for orders? A Call on the first requisition cycle after you come into the nine-month detailing window. When you call early you have the maximum chance of getting your choice of assignment. Different Types of Duty Q Why are there six schrift duty codes but only five actual schriftarts of duty? A The former Type 5 was neutral duty, which did not count toward sea or shore duty. Neutral duty was eliminated by the Navy in 2000. Q What are the different types of duty? A Heres a list of the different duty types, from the Navy website Type 1 Contiguous United States (CONUS) shore dutyType 2 CONUS sea dutyType 3 Overseas shore (sea duty for rotational purposes)Type 4 Overseas sea dutyType 5 Ov erseas shore duty Q How do I get considered for a Special Duty Program assignment? A Each rating detailer provides personnel to the special duty programs. There are parameters that must be followed by each rate/rating for each assignment. Discuss the special programs options with your detailer when you are negotiating your next assignment. Spouse Co-Location Questions Q I just married or am going to marry a military spouse. Will we be able to be stationed together? A The Enlisted Transfer Manual (Art. 3.21) states that every effort will be made to allow military couples to move together whenever possible in the same manner as non-military couples. Both military members must submit an official co-location assignment request. Q When should a sailor submit spouse co-location requests? A Submit these requests 12 months prior to your PRDs. This allows detailers the maximum amount of time to work on your request. Attaching a copy of your spouses approved request to yours can help speed th e process along. But remember, spouse co-location is not guaranteed. Other Duty Questions Q I was just advanced in rate. Does my tour length change to match my new pay grade? A Projected rotation dates (PRDs) are set for the pay grade you were when the orders were issued. They are not adjusted due to advancements or reductions in rate. Q My detailer told me I was posted, what does that mean? A This means you have been placed on a requisition to hold that billet for you. It does not mean that orders have been issued. Once a billet has a posting next to it, others who may also want that billet are turned away. Q What is a MAT? A MAT stands for minimum activity tour. This is the minimum tour length you have to complete before you can be transferred. Most commands have a 24-month minimum activity tour. This assures each command gets stability from your assignment. Most sailors considering a lateral transfer into another rating are required to stay at their current command for the MA T time. Typically, most jobs in the Navy have a general pipeline of training and the type of commands that are available to any ones career. However, deviating from the general pipeline is possible and must fill a need or requirement for special programs, advanced education, or other special circumstances. If you can learn how the system works, you can make it work for you.
